Ethics

Who deserves moral protection and who does not? The answer to this question has changed drastically over the last century.  The belief that everyone is created equal did not apply to blacks, hispanics, or women for quite sometime. Small minded individuals believed that a certain race or even men were superior to those around them. Morality as it is defined in the book is," the study of how people should act toward one another, other species, and natural systems." With recent headlines in the news, morality in the world seems to be at an all time low. With police being killed, police killing citizens, and terrorist attacks unjustified harms happen daily. However, unjustified harms do not only apply to humans. According to the book "Subjects of moral worth include animals, the environment, fertilized eggs, human embryos, human fetuses, human corpses, art, culture, and the environment." It is our moral duty to protect those who cannot protect themselves, give a voice to the voiceless, and take care of the planet.

Christianity in America

In America, it seems that most people identify with Christianity in some way. However, the reasons some people identify with Christianity can vary drastically. During the 1930's public relations turned capitalism into the "Handmaiden of Christianity." If there is one person that most people will listen to and follow it is their pastor. Pastors are given so much power and have the opportunity to lead people either in the right direction or headed down the wrong path. During hard times, people tend to call on their pastor for guidance and advice. During the 30's business that were in trouble decided to take advantage of this opportunity. Businessmen decided to combine "elements of Christianity with anti-federal Libertarianism" in an attempt to dig themselves out of a deep hole. The belief that Church and State should remain separate now flew out of the window. The question is should Church and State remain separate or should they be combined? This question has caused a lot of controversy in the public school system. No matter how hard the government tries to separate them, they always seems to find a way back to each other. For example, UT is a public university yet has a Biblical reference on its famous tower which comes from John 8:32, "Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free."
